MIraculous medal question

Hi All

I am currently in RCIA. I recently bought a miraculous medal and had it blessed by a priest.
Through the blessing he said some prayers and made the sign of the cross on the medal, but he didn't use any holy water.

Just want to ask if holy water is necessary for blessing the medal?
