Transgender activists hail Obamacare protections Transgender activists are cheering a new memo from the Department of Health and Human Services that will bar health care discrimination against transgendered people by companies receiving federal dollars. According to a memo obtained by Chris Geidner of BuzzFeed, HHS considers discrimination based on "gender identity or failure to conform to stereotypical notions of masculinity or femininity" to be illegal under the Affordable Care Act. The memo comes in response to a letter sent to HHS by a number of LGBT and transgender rights groups in June. "Transgender people face severe discrimination in healthcare settings and are often denied care completely," Maya Rupert, National Center for Lesbian Rights said in a statement. "This announcement affirms that all patients in federally funded health care settings must be treated equally and may not be denied care simply because of who they are," Rupert said. "We are grateful to HHS for clarifying this important policy and providing transgender people with the security of knowing they are included in the administrations commitment to the health and well-being of all Americans." "These protections are sorely needed. As many as one in five transgender patients report being refused care because of their gender identity," the Human Rights Campaign wrote in a blog post. |
