Is There A Catholic Equivalent To This??

Wasn't sure where to put this, so if it needs to be moved, please do.

http://www.padfield.com/downloads/amplified.html

Back before I returned to the Catholic Church in June, I was doing the lessons on the above site. I really liked them and felt as though I was really studying the Bible because of the questions to answer.

I was wondering if there is a Catholic equivalent that I could start doing our can i continue to just use the above site?

Evangelizing In Town

There are regular evangelisers in town usually jehovah witnesses and some protestants. They usually have a BIG sign and are handing out religious pamphlets.

In our Catholic Church only 10% of Catholics turn up regularly so there is already a potentially rich harvest.

People fall away from church not just Catholics but other Christian faiths, the thing that still connects them is their Baptism. Are there any formal Catholic tracts/posters/flyers that can be purchased. Would this be a good idea?

Could say something like this:

Are you Christian?

Do you believe in baptism in name of the father son and Holy Spirit?

Do you believe Jesus Is God and the Trinity (Jesus is three persons in one ... the father the son and Holy Spirit).

Did you interpret this from the bible yourself? (The answer to this one is invariably No! the church also teaches us many other biblical truths inspired and revealed by the Holy Spirit).

If you are already baptised you were guided to the start of gods plan for you, the church is there to guide us further along his plan for us.

Amen

Hello! I just read the "Rapture Trap" by Paul Thigpen. It was quite informative but I still would like to explore this topic and especially as it concerns "The Book Of Revelation." Anyone have a recommendation? I would appreciate it.

Can CA Live also highlight Trump's immoral views and not just focus on Clinton??

I used to love Catholic Answers, but lately it has become low-key political. Every answer relating to politics and the election that I have heard indirectly or directly impugns Hillary. While abortion is an important issue (I am pro life), it is complicated in that not one person can fix it: even someone who declares to be pro-life like Trump.

Arguably, democratic positions may help the pro-life cause more realistically by diminishing factors that lead to women wanting abortion, like poor women's health care, inequality, and poverty.

In addition, Trump has plenty of policy positions and an attitude that is unChristian. His disregard for immigrants and refugees is a good start. His treatment of women. His idolatry of power and wealth. His claim to never ask God for forgiveness. Etc.

So CA Live, will you please address Trump as well??

Live online daily divine office: is it anywhere?

Does anyone know if anywhere online there is a live daily praying of Morning Prayer from the Liturgy of the Hours (Divine Office)? I'd just like to start my day on my laptop by praying along with some live person or group, and thereby with the whole Church. I've looked around online, but so far I only find encouragements, or samples, or lessons, or only the texts. I found a "monk" with canned background chant and Christmas tree lights forming a heart, who began OK with Let's pray to God but went swiftly downhill with God Mother and planet and who knows what. Does anybody know if the real thing is live daily online anywhere? Thanks.

Confirmation "service"

$

I recently returned to the USA from Australia. My eldest daughter received the sacrament of Confirmation in Australia, and it's now time for my younger daughter to receive the sacrament.

I was somewhat startled to learn that the two parishes we have considered for her Confirmation require her to perform "service hours". I sure don't remember that from when I was confirmed "a few" years ago! It wasn't required when my eldest daughter was confirmed in Australia.

I don't object out of hand to the idea of service as part of the preparation for confirmation, however, the parish we've chosen has some rather "odd" service requirements. There's a set number of hours required. and some "mandatory" events: several day retreats, "missal covering" and (the one that really gets my goat) she is required to be a waitress and a "prize runner" for a "salad luncheon" put on by the Rosary Society.

These requirements are being put forward by the Director of Religious Education (lay), but every indication is that it's being done under the auspices of the pastor.

Can I get some feedback on the concept of Confirmation Service: when it started, what is the idea behind it, are there any basic rules that a parish needs to follow?

And an opinion: shouldn't service be geared toward actually preparing the candidate for Confirmation (good works, prayer, Bible and catechism study, etc) or are items like "salad luncheon service" worthwhile?

Thanks and God Bless!

Margam Kali: Traditional Dance of the St. Thomas Christians

Dear Friends,

One of the most ancient traditions still kept by the Syrian Christians of Kerala is Margam Kali. "Margam" translates to "The Way" or "The Path" and "Kali" means "dance" or "play". These titles reference to The Way or Path of St. Thomas. The entire dance which is accompanied by specific songs, symbols, and drums is supposed to represent the acts of St. Thomas as he was proselytizing Kerala.

Margam Kali is often performed by six dancers and a singer. They dance the "The Way" around a Nilavilku or St. Thomas Cross-Lamp to specific steps accompanied by distinct Margam Kali songs. When performing the dance, female Margam Kali groups always where the Chatayum Mundu which is the distinct white traditional sari worn only by the Syrian Christians in Kerala. Margam Kali was historically danced by men and boys but eventually the privilege was also given to women and is mainly practiced by them today. Today Margam Kali is performed generally by the St. Thomas Christians at cultural events and by the Knanaya as apart of the marriage celebrations.

Stuff concerning voting for a pro-abortion candidate

The USCCB has come out with a document called Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship. Part I of the document contains a sentence in Section 34 that reads:

Quote:

A Catholic cannot vote for a candidate who favors a policy promoting an intrinsically evil act, such as abortion, euthanasia, assisted suicide, deliberately subjecting workers or the poor to subhuman living conditions, redefining marriage in ways that violate its essential meaning, or racist behavior, if the voter's intent is to support that position.
Notice that I have added emphasis via boldface.

The late Fr. Stephen F. Torraco wrote this brief catechism. The last two sentences in Fr. Stephen's answer to Question 14 in the catehcism read:

Quote:

To vote for such a candidate even with the knowledge that the candidate is pro-abortion is to become an accomplice in the moral evil of abortion. If the voter also knows this, then the voter sins mortally.
This seems to suggest that Fr. Stephen generally considered it a mortal sin for someone to vote for a pro-abortion candidate even if there is no intent on the voter's part to support said candidate's pro-abortion views. Can someone on CAF help me out here? Please remember Canon 1373.

Sky Atlantic - The Young Pope

There is a new show starting next week which is apparently all about a new Pope coming to power. He appears to be a pawn in the power play of the other Cardinals but has his own plan for the Papacy.

Does anyone know anything about this new show, it sounds good and plan to watch it myself.

Anyone planning to watch it?

Flannery O'Connor stories: Spiritually immature?

$

I have heard from critics of O'Connor that claim her stories falsely use theology of suffering with grace as a way to justify using alot of violence and disturbing content in her stories.

Some will even say it is a sin to put disturbing imagery in one's mind, even if the goal is to show the truth of suffering with grace. They will counter the argument that the bible is full of grotesque events, including the crucifixion of Christ, but those weren't entertainment. They were historical events.

Some have even said that those who rely on her stories to get a better theological understanding of things are "spiritually immature", because a more mature person would only focus on the true, the good, and the beautiful. They already know that there is sin and ugliness in the world. Having stories that portray it is only causing more damage. "Using the dark" is just a cheap way to satisfy base desires while at the same time, yearning for something spiritual.

So now this has me scrupulous when I engage in fiction similar to O'Connor.

Are the above complaints legit, or are their holes in their arguments?

These question of mine came after I read this blog from an O'Connor critic and the comments section of that blog.

How do you respond when someone begins mockin Catholic belief if the Real Presence? It is a hard thing to refute for me, because it takes much faith.

Case-in-point: from the show It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, one character says, "so you're telling me Jesus comes back to life every Sunday in the form of a bowl of crackers, and then you just proceed to eat the man?" How would you answerve this with logic and charity?

1,000 Clinton-Petraeus emails missing from records sent to State, FBI files show

Quote:

Roughly 1,000 emails between Hillary Clinton and Gen. David Petraeus were thought to be missing from the 30,000 emails provided by Clinton’s team to the State Department in December 2014, according to the newly released FBI investigative files.

Additional documents obtained through a federal lawsuit by Judicial Watch show Clinton had directed Petraeus to send her emails at her personal address, which was used for all government work during her tenure as secretary of state.
Quote:

As previously reported by Fox News, there are still two missing “bankers boxes” of emails that cannot be accounted for by Hillary Clinton’s legal team Williams & Connolly.

Clinton later maintained during congressional testimony that her team read every email, but FBI Director James Comey later said that was not true and only broad search terms were used.

Benedicta tu in mulieribus et benedictus fructus ventris tui Jesu.
Sancta Maria, Mater Dei, ora pro nobis peccatoribus,

Holy Mother, please protect and watch out for all Children.
For those suffering in silence.
For those that are hungry.
For those that have sinned.
For those unborn in the womb.
For those who go without education.
For those who have the gift of education.
For those whose parents neglect them.
For those who are physically abused.
For those who are sexually abused.
For those without hope.
For those without love.
For those who do not know of Your Son.
For those who do but have forgotten or rejected Him.
For all the Children of the world; sick, healthy, happy, sad, free, and enslaved.
Shine the light of God onto their little lives and pray for them.
O Most Holy Virgin, please suffer all Children who have none to do so for them.

help my 25 yr/o daughter is not responding well when asked to corporate at home

I have a beautiful 25 year old daughter who has been going through some terrible times. We have gladly wanted her to be at home until she discerned what to do next, but she has been really difficult to communicate with and even relate to. This has become a big issue as she has an issue with participating naturally in home life and chores around the house. We have given her some space to try to overcome her difficulties but she is responding bad and even using tantrum behaviours avoiding contributing. Currently not even trying to get a job. I am really concerned about the character she is developing.

I feeI guilty because if she doesn't change I don't want her Living at home anymore. I feeI I have no authority in my own home. My husband is also very frustrated and feeIs it's a Iack of respect.

I have tried being firm in my approach to my request to assist but nothing happens.

I appreciate advice!!

Thank you and many blessings

The Consolation of Philosophy

I've started reading the Consolation of Philosophy by Boethius, and I'm enjoying it so far. I've found it to be very insightful, but I'm wanting to hear the opinions of others who've read it. I know some historians question the quality of his Christianity, and I'm wondering if there is anything unorthodox I should look out for.
