Evidence for the Messiah Outisde Judaism

I have often wondered whether people, aside from the Jews, had any idea a Messiah would be born. Obviously, the three Wisemen knew something from ancient prophecies. However, were they familiar with Jewish writings enough to know about the coming of Jesus? Or could they have found separate writings that they followed on a hunch?

The Wisemen came from the East. Many people have postulated what that means. Even Maria Valtorta claims they came as far as Asia and Turkey.

Some people claim the poet Virgil prophesied the coming Messiah; however, could he have gotten his information from someplace beside the Jews?

In conclusion, has anyone found any information to explain how people unfamiliar with the Jews could have ascertained Jesus' birth?

Dressing for Novus Ordo mass?

Hi. So, I was raised a traditional Catholic as a child, my dad always took me to the Tridentine mass. I rather prefer the Tridentine mass, but I currently attend a Novus Ordo mass because it's the only one available. My old Traditional catholic church had a dress code; woman wore skirts that covered the knees, shirts that covered the cleavage and shoulders, nothing tight, and a hair covering of some sort, in the typical Trad Cath fashion.

When I went to the Novus ordo mass the first time, I didn't know anything about the modern church, and so I wore a long dress with sleeves and all that, and a hat. I was kind of surprised to see people in jeans and t-shirts. I've been going for about a month or so now, and I always wear long skirts and hats, because I'm still just not comfortable going to church dressed casually.

Nowadays, though, I feel slightly self-conscious. The elder ladies tend to wear skirts, but most people either wear nice slacks or jeans. There's not a single covered head in the congregation besides mine. In a way, I feel like coming in with the dresses and hats almost gives off a "holier than thou" kind of thing, which I feel really weird about since I'm actually so new to Catholicism; I haven't even received communion there yet, and I feel so weird, being the only one left sitting in the pews during communion, the only one dresses so fancy, ect.

In a way, I feel like it might be more polite to dress slightly more casually; still modestly, but blending in a bit better, you know?. I'll still wear a hat, but of course there are nice looking and yet normal looking hats out there (which I mainly wear now anyways). I don't know how I would dress it down at all. I rarely wear jeans in daily life, let alone to mass; a lot of what I wear IS my daily clothing, actually. Maybe I could swap out the ankle-length skirts for knee-length and wear cardigans instead of blouses, maybe more like how a Modern Catholic might dress if they visited a Tridentine mass

Anyways, I feel weird. I've no idea how I'm coming off. I'm really just wearing what I'm used to wearing, but it's not like what anyone else is wearing.

Do you wear a "purity" or "discernment" ring?

Someone on the Phatmass Phorums posted this question and it made me curious.

As a teen I was virulently against dating or courtship, so I was very peeved when my mom decided one day that I ought to start wearing a "purity ring;" there was apparently a popular Christian teenager who was promoting it in the media. Yes, she actually thought that a misanthrope needed a ring to remind her to "wait." :p That conversation did not end in peaceful harmony, and I never wore the ring.

In my early twenties, I wore a "chastity ring" once, and my brother-in-law (who knows that I have a romantic deficiency) quipped, "So, when're you getting married?" Then I realized that, for me, emphasizing my celibacy was redundant and absurd. Why would I wear a ring that might signify that I was waiting for marriage when I so obviously was not interested in marriage?

Now that I'm discerning religious life, though, I wonder if I should recycle the "purity ring" as a "discernment ring?"

There IS a cute guy at daily Mass who has tried to get me to talk a couple of times, so the concern is not entirely and utterly unwarranted (I hope). :D

Hi,
I'm currently applying for jobs atm. So far I've filled out 4 applications, and I'd really like to be hired sometime this week (preferably full time) somewhere. This isn't a career or anything, just to save up some money so I can go back to college.

Please pray that I get a job sometime this week.

The future of traditional Catholicism?

I've followed the growth of traditional Catholicism in the US over the last 20 years when there were approximately 20 weekly TLM in 1991 to over 400 today.

Fr. Zuhlsdorf has written several times on his blog that he expects a different attitude among the priesthood towards the TLM over the next 10-15 years as those ordained in the 60's, 70's & 80's are replaced by new ordinands who seem more receptive to the TLM.

This happened at a parish in my hometown when a new pastor (convert) was named. He put the kibosh on the plans to build a church in the round even though the plans were finalized and paid for. He built a traditional Gothic style church instead.

He also:

1. Reserved serving the altar to boys and young men only (cassocks only)
2. Encouraged reception of Holy Communion while kneeling and on the tongue
3. Instituted a weekly TLM on Wed. evenings
4. Began Perpetual Adoration
5. Replaced a Sun. Spanish Mass with a TLM

These are just a few of the things he did but you get the idea. In his short time as pastor, he's had 3 young men enter the seminary from the parish.

Is it your sense that seminarians are more open to the traditional aspects of the Faith than they were a generation ago? Do you think Fr. Zuhlsdorf is correct in his opinion that younger priests will begin to introduce more traditional practices and TLMs at the parish level over the next few years?

Intercessory Saint for someone studying Catholicism

Hi,

I'm currently reading about the Catholic Faith, and I don't consider myself a Protestant anymore, since I don't believe in Sola Scriptura, Sola Fide etc anymore.

But I sometimes feel I face opposition, both from people, but also from satan I think, because I'm learning more about the true Faith. Sometimes I get doubts regarding the Faith. I've also been crying a lot to God and been having anxiety, since this is a life-changing step in my life.

Are there any Saint I can ask for intercession from regarding this? I was thinking of Apostles for example.

I hope this is the right forum.

Hello,
I have gone through all steps of baptism and communion. However, I have stopped going to the parish I took those steps through. Can I get confirmed at a different parish or do I have to stay at my old parish? Are there any online ways to be confirmed?

John's authority

St. John (Juan) de Ribera's feastday is January 6th. John (Juan) was appointed as the Archbishop of Valencia, Spain in 1568. King Philip III of Spain appointed him Viceroy of Valencia in 1602. Was there a rule in the Roman Catholic Church that did not prevent an archbishop, who had religious authority, to have civil authority?

The terms "Christianism" and "Catholicist"

Christianism is considered a politico-religious aspect among many Christians who want secular laws that reflect their Christian faith. It's like a counterpoint to the term "Islamism" and Islams relationship to Sharia Law.

...but what about the term: Catholicist. Could we call someone who is Catholic, and wants Secular laws to reflect the Catholic faith in particular a Catholicist..? Just wondering.

Because we refer to Sharia Law advocates as "Islamists". Or would the term "Christianist" be better?

Do Catholics "pray to saints" or "ask for intercession"

I am searching for my home in a church, and have many questions, please be patient.

I was baptised and 1st communion Catholic, but drifted away. I saw too many things that did not seem right.

I am now married to a Catholic, and am a Christian who loves God. I go to mass with my wife, but there are some real issues I have with the church yet - please be patient.

The concept of "Saints" is a little iffy for me. First - do Catholics pray to saints or ask for intercession? It seems hard to keep the two separate, and praying to anyone but God is wrong in what I believe.

Second - going to a "Saint" implys to me that God won't listen to just me, seems counter to Jesus' teaching.

Again - please answer patient and honestly - thank you.

What's your favorite Mass Setting/Kyriale?

I go back and forth on this. I like bits and pieces from a lot of them. Orbis factor (XI), Kyrie magnae Deus potentiae (V), Cunctipotens Genitor Deus (IV), Cum jubilo (IX), Lux et origo(I) are all great. Also a big fan of the Ambrosian Gloria IV.

Anyway, I'm not sure which I would pick as my favorite. Anyway, discuss :)

I was going to add a poll, but the max is 10 choices and there are 18 settings!

Also, if you want to hear each one:

"Demonstrators held signs and chanted slogans such as 'Love always wins,' turning what started as one school’s personnel decision [to terminate a gay man who married his partner] into a rallying cry for changes in the Catholic church’s stance on gay and lesbian issues, including same-sex marriage."

First I am a husband of 20+ years & and father of 2 boys.

The first question is, I have never been confirmed, can you still be married in the church?

I ask the first question, because I would like to get married in the church, I don't want to be living in mortal sin.

Also, I am making an effort to get back with the church, haven't confessed my sins in a long long time, what if I can't remember all of my past sins, how can they be forgiven.

I know I might sound like a bad Christian, and I have been, I just want to get in good graces with the Lord.

Can I be a groomsman for a morman wedding?

Hi,

I friend of mine is having a Mormon wedding and has asked me to be one of the groomsmen. I'm not entirely sure what this entails as I'm under the impression I can't enter their temple anyway and they are already civilly married. The bride converted from Catholicism when she was a kid along with most of her family. As a catholic, can I be a groomsmen for whatever kind of ceremony they are planning? I feel I shouldn't.

Thanks for the help.

Should we be more offended by violence depicted on screen than sex/nudity?

I was perusing a movie forum and crossed this question:

Quote:

Why Are People So Offended by Sex /Nudity?

Yes, this is in response to The Wolf of Wall Street, but it can also refer to Blue is the Warmest Color, Shame, and a bunch of other movies with sex and nudity.

Judging by all the reports of people being offended by the graphic nature of Wolf, I thought it would be much worse. Sure, It's an adult movie but adults should be able to handle it. It wasn't even that bad!

There were reports of and older Academy member telling Scorsese "Shame on you!" for making a movie like this. You see a ton of posts on here talking about it.

I just don't get it. It's 2013, as a society, why are we so offended of the human body? It's nothing we haven't seen before. This seems to just be an American problem because Europe seems to be much more lenient and accepting of sex/nudity in their films and TV shows.

People seem to be okay with murder and bloody violence, yet they freak out over some nudity? I'd say severed limbs, pools of blood, and dead bodies are much more disturbing them a couple of nipples. We can't show nipples but we can show people getting their heads blown off in PG-13 movies nowadays.

Recently, there have be actual studies showing violence in PG-13 movies isn't that far off from R movies and they are showing much more of it. Sure it might not be AS graphic, but it's the act that matters. People are fine with it, but if there are sex scenes, people get uncomfortable and objective.

Study Link- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G-p1...4&noredirect=1

Even in R rated movies, nudity seems to have more negativity associated with it than violence. Like this, people freak out of the nudity but don't seem to have a problem with the other 1000 violent movies this year?

So showing murder and death is more acceptable than the showing the natural human body? It doesn't make sense.

My "theory" is that violence seems more like a "fantasy" and people don't expect kids to out out their and kill people because they know it's wrong. But sex seems much more real and attainable so people are afraid it will be cause teenagers to out and want to have sex.

Yet, with all these school shootings are violent outbursts, it seems like we should be condemning violence more. I think most would agree that it would be better for people to have sex (safe of course) instead of killing people.

What do you guys think? Why are people so offended by nudity?
Should the graphic violence be a more concern than what "is natural"?

Stations of the Cross

Hi, I was just wondering what formulas and methods people use for Stations of the Cross. I have several prayer books that start out with a Verse, a response, a meditation, Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory be...

I was wondering if there is an abbreviated version that a person can do by themselves or if there are other formulas?

Thanks in advance,

AJ
