So, I'm in a "Christian Fellowship Club" at school. I'm pretty on guard a lot, because they're mostly Protestants. Today, we were talking about bringing Christianity to others on campus (which I was nervous about). Somebody mentioned that it might be culturally insensitive (eek number one). In response, the leader talked about truth and stuff (whew), but then she started out saying, "I've been to a lot of different communities, and I've noticed something that's a huge difference between most Christian churches and the Catholic churches..." (here I got REALLY nervous, since she's a Baptist pastor). But then she continued, "And it's that the Protestant churches look like someone picked up a church from Iowa and plopped it down. Yes, that would be a loss of culture. The Catholic churches, on the other hand, use native architecture, and have native celebrations with new Christian meanings, and do their best to integrate the truths of the Bible into the culture, so that stuff is gained, not just lost. I think that Catholics do a really good job of separating the truth, what Jesus REALLY is all about, and the traditions that are key to growing into a relationship with Him, from the style of singing or the iconography or the lingo we sometimes get hung up on. Maybe we should learn from that." Then, miracle of miracles, we talked about having a movie night and a speaker come to engage people and bring up spiritual questions. One girl, also a protestant, said that the director of a nearby women's transitional house should come... the director is a nun! And they talked about having Fr. Greg Boyle from Homeboy industries come as well to talk about Christianity and Social Justice.
Here I was all nervous about this group being anti-catholic, and they're using us as an example and as a means to bring people to God!
Would you all join me in giving thanks for this awesome, awesome surprise.
